#CfEM National action research conference

#CfEM Live provides opportunities for Action Research Groups to showcase their findings and explore their key learning.

Welcome to CfEM Reimagining FE Maths: Inspiring sector-driven change

We had an amazing day at the CfEM final conference which took place at the Rep Theatre in central Birmingham with 179 practitioners from across England. Delegates selected three practitioner-led workshops from the twelve available on a range of topics grouped under the headings of:

  • Teaching for Understanding
  • Responsive Teaching
  • Engagement and resilience

You can access all the workshop presentations from the Conference Padlet as well as other artefacts including the video of Centre Leads, CfEM principals and an impact video we had playing on loop, the amazing action research posters from 2022-2023 action research projects (see the penultimate Padlet column) as well as the newly published ‘Action Research for Professional Development: A Practical Guide for FE Maths Teachers’ (aka AR Gide for Maths Teachers).

We’ve also added the full and summary reports from the Mastery Trials (2021-2022) undertaken by the University of Nottingham which detected improved outcomes equivalent to one month of additional learning for students taught by teachers who had taken part in the most intensive intervention programme. This increased to two months of additional learning for the most deprived students (as measured by free school meals uptake).

You can find CfEM action 15 minute video-presentations, underpinning research reports and a synthesis of action research findings on the Education and Training Foundation’s Action Research Resources and Evidence hub.

Our panel responded to four questions but before they did, we asked the audience of 180 strong practitioners to respond to one of the four questions. View responses below.

  • Q1 Networking and collaboration have been a key feature of CfEM. How can we ensure these continue beyond the end of CfEM?
  • Q2 Teaching for Mastery (in FE) – is it just a fad or is it here to stay?
  • Q3 How do we ensure a take-up of mastery teaching across the post-16 sector?
  • Q4 If all students do maths to 18, what maths should they do?

(N.B N/A = respondent getting to the one question thy want to contribute their thoughts to)
