Elizabeth Draper 'Tried and Tested Ideas : How to Make READING Happen in Further Education.'

'Levels of literacy indicate life-chances, life expectancy:.'Reading poverty’ and 'reading-shame' are regularly encountered in FE English classes. I am going to tell you my story of 5 years of work tackling these difficult aspects of our working lives 'head-on'. - Looking at how a positive reading culture can be created , not just within English classrooms but, importantly, across colleges as a whole.

Why do we ask questions in our lessons? What’s a question you ask often and why? How do we create a thinking culture in class? Bring along your ideas: leave with a new question or technique to enhance thinking and questioning in your classroom.

ESOL Pathway:
Rachel Öner 'Using infographics to pracatice all four skills.'

This session will examine how useful infographics are to the ESOL classroom. We will look at how infographics can be used from Entry level to Level 2, from basic conversation practice to encouraging critical thinking skills. The session should provide a solid base for tutors to want to further explore using infographics and how to exploit them to create tasks in reading, writing and speaking and listening. It will also discuss differentiation.

Josh Spears 'Supporting Students in Cultural Poverty'

The need for creativity within society has never been greater and English Language at GCSE is how learners grow into their creative selves. However, imagination is under threat from cultural poverty, with more and more learners unable to access experiences in their own lives which impacts their progress and personal development. This talk aims to explore the how, why and what can be done to fight this.

How can we make it easier for our adult learners to continue to learn online? How can we make the experience more organised, and use the tools and skills we’ve acquired ? A talk on how we can make online learning easy for adult learners as we move forward.

Jonny Kay 'Leadership in FE English: motivating and managing performance'

With an enormously challenging 2020/21 coming to a close, attention turns to next year. This session will focus on strategies and innovations to tackle the challenges which await in 2021/22. Here, Jonny will share his approaches to improving attendance, managing student behaviour, motivating staff and approaches to support challenging staff.
